I've often visited there since, usually with A, and discovered it is a great place to drink a few glasses of wine and watch the ocean. There's a panoramic pacific view which often includes Grey Whales and from which we have seen a pod of Orcas.
In a blog entry a couple of years ago, I show this picture from a park bench at Rocky Creek:

I asked then what old Bob Emerson was doing that got him swept off the rocks.
This morning, A and I were having breakfast in The Pines restaurant and reading the Depoe Bay Beacon account of Brian Wells, who fell to his death earlier this month pretty close to where Bob met his demise. 43 year old Brian was visiting there with his 54 year old wife and and a 62 year old friend, when about 6:00 p.m. Brian is taking pictures and falls to his death. I guess maybe I'm wondering a little bit about this trio anyway, but I can tell you that you can't get much of a picture at 6:00 p.m. You would have a better chance of seeing the Milky Way.
The Beacon article has a picture with a diagram indicating the location of the fall. And there is a bridge there I have never seen. We decide to drive down and investigate.
The bridge isn't on Highway 101. It's on the road to the Inn at Otter Crest. "It is also known as the Ben Jones Bridge, for the 'Father of the Coast Highway.' Jones introduced legislation for
construction of the Roosevelt Military Highway (the original name for the Oregon Coast Highway) in 1919 and convinced the federal government to finance half its cost." (ODOT)
Anyway, Bob's and Brian's deaths make a person wonder about the dynamics going on in some people's lives. Any guesses about these two?
