Aviators -- The Wright Brothers and Howard Hughes

Orville Wright was still alive when Howard Hughes coaxed the H-4 Hercules skyward. Wright died the following year in 1948. The whole era of flight from the Wright Brothers to the present is slightly more than a hundred years. It’s not remarkable for our newspapers report the birthday of someone over one hundred and one. They’ve lived longer than the whole era of flight.

Bob and I saw evidence of this hundred year leap into the sky in McMinnville this past week at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. The Museum houses a replica of the Wright Flyer and the H-4 Hercules along with over a dozen fighter and spy planes. Our comfortable days sailing through the clouds to vacation destinations are fueled in part from man's drive to kill or keep from being killed.

Last year I read The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright by Tom Crouch. And last week, Bob and I saw Aviator. I'll be posting some reflections as time goes by.

Time waits for no man. Time is fleeting. Make the most of your time here on earth. Happy Birthday!
