They say that when our species developed, we were hunter gatherers. (If you take the extreme religious point of view, we started out tending the Garden of Eden.) In either case, there is something elemental in our nature about gathering and storing food. Some of us also would like to live a little longer and the research says that eating healthy has a big part to play. The daughter must have been tuned into this kind of thinking because she gave me a food dehydrator for Father's Day.
Another key ingredient in this little drama is the abundance of fresh fruit in season in this part of Oregon. Right now, strawberries abound, --the good kind, not California crap. Soon to follow will be peaches, pears and apples. Last year, up in Brooks, just north of here, we bought a Home Depot five gallon bucket full of every variety of apple for $8! And of course, I have had a love affair with blueberries for some time now and prefer to candy.
So my hunter gatherer instinct will have plenty to work with. Family members might also expect some of the fruits of my labors as gifts. I no longer eat beef, but might make some jerky for family and friends who do.
(This is not my first introduction to Seal a Meal. Back in my brief career as a tech for a Geo-technical Engineering company we took lots of soil samples. We sealed them into bags with a Seal a Meal.)
And if nothing else, everyone ought to have a hobby. Why not something fairly useful?
