Kevin Mannix on the Ballot

Kevin Mannix has a ballot measure for the next election which takes a stern hand with property crime. It will likely be popular with a certain part of the electorate. However, the cost of incarcerating the perpetrators will be high and long term. And it misses the cure which is prevention.

Property crime, like auto theft, is highly visible. However, the crime which should frighten all of us is identity theft. I am just about finished with Stealing Your Life by Frank Abagnale. You may remember him from To Catch a Thief. The likelihood of being a victim is very high. The results are devastating. The main way to protect yourself is checking your credit report with regularity. Other things like not using checks at all if possible and having a cross cut shredder are helps. A book highly worth reading, also out on CD.

Kevin Mannix might have something if he aimed his energies on identity thieves who are not often caught and if they are hardly do jail time no matter how serious their damage.
