Fear Mongering 101
I don't know about you, but I am haunted by children dying by the second and the fact that over one billion people live on less than $1 a day. Two point two billion live on less than $2 a day. There are only 6.5 billion on the planet, so you can do the math.
Back in 2000, the United Nations established the Millennium Development Goals. The first goal is to reduce extreme poverty by half by 2015. The United States has kind of a scatter gun approach to the problem, but we, and by that I include George W. Bush, have been working on it.
Last year, Senator Barack Obama introduced Senate Bill 2433 also known has the Global Poverty Act. The focus of the legislation is to organize the scatter gun approach and make it more effective. By now this legislation has many co sponsors including Oregon's Gordon Smith.
Senator Obama's short history hasn't provided much dirt so fear mongers are trying to turn S 2433 into something to nail him with. Google or Youtube s 2433 and you will see what I mean.
Please don't fall for this kind of fear mongering. Bread for the World provides The Truth about the Global Poverty Act as a corrective. Check it out for more information.
