Vietnam, Iraq and the American Footprint

American footprints are all over the world, --Japan, Germany, Korea and some countries in Africa. The scenario is the same. We go to war, win but we don't for some logic beyond reason, ever leave. It defies logic to have troops stationed most of these footprint locations and it costs the American taxpayer. Now are are told that we are going to have an footprint in Iraq for a long time. But this time the expense is also in terms of American dead and wounded, not to mention bankrupting the taxpayer, his children and grandchildren.
But then there is Vietnam.
There's no American footprint (in terms continuing American military presence. I know we left a lot of other footprints behind.)
The annual cost to the American people today: zero.
What if we had "won" in Vietnam? Our military would still be there and tax payers would still be shelling out millions of dollars a year.
Can you honestly say that the people of South Vietnam would be better off had we "won?" They had some rough times, but actually have adopted a capitalist economy.
Seems like the only time we actually leave is when we do lose.
