Mailing Returns today, I think a New Record for Me

I finished up our Federal and State returns yesterday. That's a sign 1) We're not making a whole lot of money, 2) they owe us a refund and I want it now. I decided not to e file this year. I know, it's supposed to be faster. And TurboTax gives one a coupon to get back the $14.95 it costs to file. However, you must first pay the $14.95. Did that last year. To get the refund, one can fill out the form on line. Evenso, you also have to fill in the coupon in the box. And of course, you must have the sales receipt. Then, maybe in three months or so, they will return $14.50. That is, if you entered the considerable amount information correctly. I figure I have a head start on everyone else anyway, so I'll just drop the federal form off at the post office. Since I live in the state capital, I'll just drive downtown and hand deliver it to the Department of Revenue. They told me there last year that they process them in the order they receive them, no matter how they come in. I guess I could poll you on this topic: which do you prefer, death or taxes? and why.

Well, that one's a hard one to answer... As a married couple with no deductions (ie. kids or property) we really get screwed and owe a good chunk of flesh every year, so that really sucks. If I trusted the government to spend my taxes efficiently, I guess I would feel better about that. Death, on the other hand, even though I'd rather not fit into this category now, the end result of spending eternity with Jesus is incredible.

Well, death does get you out of filling out the forms.

We prefer not to pay as much during the year and forgo big refunds. Why should the government get free use of our money? Usually what we do get back from the feds goes to pay state taxes.

I would take taxes over death at this point. Ask me again on April 14th.
