Killed by Corn?

In Oregon, doctors don't get paid for signing death certificates. Consequently, Bob's doctor will sign his death certificate without examining him. The Doctor will put down as the cause of death what he was treating the patient for most recently. With Bob, that will be some version of hypertension and or diabetes. His doctor won't get around to signing until Monday or Tuesday.
When one dies at Bob's age of 76, we could say "natural causes." Our father, however, lived until 83 and dad's mother lived well into her 90's.
Movie makers for King Corn start out with the disturbing news that they will not live as long as their parents. Big news for a country where parents expect their children to do better than they did. Why? The answer of the movie is modern day corn. Modern day corn isn't like the 40 bushel to the acre corn Uncles Hank and Herb raised. Today's hyped up corn will average 180 bushels to the acre at the very least. Bob didn't eat much corn as corn. He ate a lot of it as high fructose corn syrup. Check your ingredients panel. It's in almost everything. And corn is the major feed for beef and dairy cattle. Bob dearly loved meat and cheese.
So, as a consequence, Bob became an early adult onset diabetic and had a stroke.
I guess we can't complain when someone dies at 76. But maybe without corn he could have lived as long as his Dad and Grandma.
