The News from Newport, Oregon

There are so many great things to enjoy on the Oregon coast! We were blessed with a number of them this weekend. Nothing can improve on spending quality time with family, of course. Then comes the opportunity to see more than a half dozen whales and a handful of dolphin. Add to that, the old town Newport sea lions.
But the special highlight this year was buying fish for supper right off a boat. Both tuna and salmon were for sale. We wanted both, but couldn't eat two whole fish. A Japanese American family came by at the same time so we ordered together and split our purchase. They would be eating their tuna raw, so offered no cooking suggestions. We didn't know how to cook our fresh tuna, but a cell phone call to friends in Pacific City gave us the answer. Our supper in a restaurant would easily have gone for $40 to $80 each, especially since it was topped off with cherry pie. We'll be going back one day, come what may, and I don't mean to Blue Bayou.
