Pink Martini

Whenever one contemplates getting from Salem to Portland on I-5, one must consider the risk factor. There may be road work. A semi may have over turned and blocked the road. There may have been a high speed police chase, with body parts to be cleaned up. Under the best of circumstances, I-5 is no picnic. We had Pink Martini tickets for their concert last night at the Portland Zoo. And so we decide to avoid I-5 and take the back way. Toward the end of the trip I had some deja voo. I remember a similar trip years before to the Vervoort Sausage Festival, -- not quite lost, yet not quite on track either. All of this leads up to why we arrived at the zoo later than we had hoped. And this elephant is the only animal I saw close enough to snap a picture.
As you can see, there were plenty of people. I followed the Band's wishes and took no pictures of either the Buckles, the opening act, or Pink Martini.
Three quarters through the concert, A says, isn't that the same harpist we heard play at Schreiner's Iris Gardens a few years back? I agreed to the possibility. I remember buying a tape. Later the Band leader confirmed the harpist as Maureen Love. A little internet seach reveals the following: "She can also be heard on the early Beach Boys recording of In My Room, composed by her talented cousin, Brian Wilson."
Pink Martini played for an hour and fifteen minutes, plus a fifteen minute encore. They ended up with an all time favorite of mine, Brazil! (I once downloaded 27 versions.) The whole concert was pure magic.
Then back on I-5. The dashboard computer is ringing in alarm. "Fuel is dangerously low." I-5 as turned into a parking lot south of Tigard, but we were able find an off ramp and maneuver over to 99W, thus completing a long but great day!

You do know she's a sister of the Beach Boys . . .
