Today At St. Mark, GovernorTed Kulongoski Signs PayDay Loan Legislation

A week ago, I and another member of St. Mark in Salem, attended a hearing on payday loan legislation. The legislation passed in lightning fashion in a historic one day session of the Oregon Legislature. Yesterday, I was surprised to learn that the Governor would sign the bill into law today at our church! Wow! What a response!

There of course is a little more to it. Power at the capitol building, including the Governor's office is currently off for updating. That, and tireless Lutheran Advocay leaders, had something to do with the choice.

Ellen Lowe of the Oregon Food Bank stated perhaps this would be the last time the the story of Mary Ann Olson would have to be told. Ms. Olson took out a payday loan of $150 for orthopedic shoes and found that loan escalated into $1900 before she got it paid off.

Thanks, Governor and Legislature for passing and signing this bill!
