January 17, 1706 - Was it the Man or His times?

Three hundred years ago on this day Benjamin Franklin was born. I doubt that anyone can do more to document his life and times than PBS has done. So I won't bother. I will pose the question, however. Were his accomplishments due to his abilities, or his times, both or something else? Give us your thoughts.
