Mom and Bob, very possibly at his baptism in 1933
"Mrs. Louise Schackel, nee Heintz, was born October 6, 1909, at Summerdale, Alabama. In 1917 she moved with her parents to Edgerton, Minnesota, and then to Woodstock. Here she went to religious instruction and was confirmed, thereafter her parents located at Fulda."July 17, 1932 she was united in marriage with John Schackel of Worthington, Minnesota and lived there until September 15, 1936, when the family moved to Redwood Falls where Mr. Schackel received employment in the creamery and ice cream factory.
"Frequent deaths in the relation the last few years preyed heavily on her none too strong constitution, the last being that of her mother January 9th. Returning from the funeral held January 13th, her physical condition was none too good. Several weeks ago she received medical care at the hospital at Redwood Falls for several days, and was permitted to go home, but to continue resting in bed.
"Apparently she seemed to be gaining in strength. A week ago Saturday she returned to the hospital. Early Sunday morning, February 7th, she was delivered of a stillborn child, a son.
"Frequent hemorrhages caused considerable loss of blood, leaving her in a very weakened condition. She was given five blood transfusions, and apparently seemed to be gaining slightly.
"However, God in His allwise wisdom willed otherwise. She passed away peacefully Friday morning at 8:30, the day we expected to bury the infant. Today with deep sorrow and great grief we are taking mother and babe to their final resting places.
"Mrs. Schackel reached the age of 27 years, 4 months and 6 days.
"She leaves to mourn her untimely departure her grief stricken husband, a son Robert, not quite 4 years, and another son James, just past 2 years besides three sisters, Cornelia of Redwood Falls, Mrs. Otto Gundermann and husband of Slayton, Mrs. Roy Norton and husband of Gary, South Dakota; two brothers and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Heintz of Kimbrey, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Heintz of Northfield. And from her husband's side the surviving relatives are: Her aged mother-in-law, Mrs. Herman Schackel, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schackel, Mr. Herman Schackel, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Lestico, all of Worthington.
"Mrs. Schackel was a life long member of the Lutheran Church and faith in her belief and life, a loyal wife and loving mother to her children. All her time and energy as a Christian mother were devoted to her family and home.
"And now, as we firmly believe, her soul and that of her infant are in the heavenly home."
-- the obituary of Louise Schackel read by the minister at the time of her funeral service.

Time -
I lived next door to your grandmother, Louisa Schackel. When she died, your Uncle Henry and your Aunt Cora built a new house on that property and I lived next door to them. I knew your Aunt Sophie well; her son, Dudley, and her daugher, Mary, were my second cousins. I knew Everett Leistico well. I knew your Uncle Herman and Aunt Ruth. Your father used to come to Worthington to visit Hank and Cora. I did not know him well but I did know who he was. From all this family, the only one still living - and still at Worthington - is Ruth and Herman's son Dennis. Dennis is your cousin. My father, Ray Crippen, Sr., knew Hank, Sophie, John, Hermie Schackels from the early 1920s.
