Pride goeth before the fall. A planned all week to go to Springfield and help with curtains. I could have gone and worked on shelves. I opted to tune up the 89 Riviera instead. After all, I had already completed this project on the 88 and the 92 Buicks. The 89 has the same engine. What could go wrong? Well, the number one rule for changing plugs is "be careful not to pull the wire out of, or tear, the boots." To get at the front plugs I had to take out a cooling fan, but tore a boot anyway. Five out of six plug wires did not give up without a fight.
Tearing just one boot means buying a set of plug wires. So the project won't get more expensive if one tears others. Just more frustrating. I had to demolish several boots in the back row. (All this could have been prevented if the last person to change the plugs had used some "easy off" compound, but obviously, he didn't.) The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is right under the plug wires, (which I am now going to have to replace anyway.) But it too does not want to come out. (Enter vise grips.)And then there is the oxygen sensor, also deeply buried. To get at it, I had to take off the shroud over the wiper motor. Guess what? Mouse nest. He/she had gathered pink insulation from somewhere for a bed and there were a fist full of sunflower seed shells. Nice warm nesting spot, until the car starts moving. Oh well.
The completion of this project will have to wait for tomorrow since A has the car, and of course I need more parts. So, how was your day?

You should have come south. Putting in the shelves took no time at all. M
