In no way would I wish to diminish the terrible effects of the Tsunami. It has been a quick, dramatic disaster. And rescuing victims has been impressive and dramatic. But the Tsunami disaster doesn't hold a candle to the AIDS disaster in Africa alone. As of today, there are 221,100 Tsunami victims. In 2003, 2.2 million people died from AIDS. An estimated 25 million adults and children were living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa at the end of 2003, and an estimated twelve million children have been orphaned.
In Tanzania, 1.5 million adults and children have AIDS. There are 980,000 AIDS orphans in Tanzania alone.
Add to AIDS massive unemployment, inadequate living conditions, medical facilities and proper nutrition. The difficulties of life are almost beyond belief.
The Yatima Group Trust Fund Orphanage
The singing children in the picture are orphans at the Yatima Group Trust Fund Orphanage. They are lacking so many things: parents, adequate housing, nutritious food, appropriate sanitation. There are only 92 of them, yet they are overcrowded. But they don't have AIDS! And you can see in the picture that there is love in the place. Dr. James Lace, a Salem Oregon Pediatrician became there champion a few years ago and enlisted St. Mark Lutheran Church in helping build a building on their campus. I work in supporting them by our church coffee sales. And on the occasion of my 70th birthday my loving family and friends gave them a gift of $240.00 as a present to me. It was a very touching gift because it was given by people who understand what makes me tick. I hope you will become interested in this cause as well. Let me know in the comments section.
