Puzzle Box

The Visiting Theologian program at St Mark Lutheran is funded in part by a Fund raiser called "Wine, Wisdom and Song." Part of the funds come from items members have contributed to be auctioned off. My entry this year is a Puzzle Box I made. Each point of the star is a puzzle piece. Each point also opens up to be a puzzle box for storage of trinkets. I made the puzzle, A did the painting.

She is also submitting strawberry jam as her contribution.

Actually, a twelve pound bucket of cherries I picked in about an hour out at Olson's Farms.

This was after mowing the lawn in the morning. I was considering spreading bark dust this afternoon, but opted for the cherries. On the way home, I had an early supper at the Olive Garden...

Continuing our trip down memory lane, Mom died in 1937. We were living in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where Dad worked at the Gandrud Creamery as a ice cream maker. World War II broke out December 7th. Dad's brothers enlisted. Dad would like to have joined them, but had family responsibilities they didn't have. The family moved to Tacoma, Washington, where Dad worked in the shipyard.

My life in public school consisted of this year of kindergarten in Redwood Falls and a year of first grade in Stellicolm, Washington. After that, I was educated by the church.

Taken on a winter outing to a granite quarry. You probably recognize the scene from an excellent painting G did of it.

Grandma S was much beloved by all. I imagine this was one of our last trips to Worthington before moving to Tacoma.
Dad cleaned up pretty good. He loved to wear a suit.

I got here by a very round about route. I bought a new Kodak printer and was toying with its capabilities. That got me to old picture files and that, in view of the coming father's day holiday got me in the mood to publish some of the items I've collected. Mom died when I was two, so I would have to be a little older than that here. It has to be summer time because we are wearing sun suits made by my Aunt Connie. I have a "J" on mine and brother Bob has an "R" on his. Our family were great Sunday picnic people. I imagine this picture was taken by Connie on a Sunday afternoon, when, of course, Dad would not be working. I'm guessing in late 1937. I'm not much older than my grandson is now.

I also changed the anode rod in my water heater today. The owners' guides for water heaters

say the anode rod should be checked every year, but this usually doesn't happen. End result is

that eventually the water heater will leak and need to be replaced.

A and I visited the Polk County museum this afternoon, and I almost cried. The reason: they had a loom which is nearly identical to the one on which my grandmother made rugs. I watched her do this and helped a number of times. She contributed much to her support this way.

The Lancaster Mile

Lancaster Mall has been around for a long time. Like other shopping malls, they have their problems keeping a full line up of stores and shops. Since it is way over on the other side of Salem, I don't go there very often. But the weather has chosen to dump massive rain showers on us this week. I need a place that is warm and dry if I am to walk. So, off to the mall.

The nice part about the mall is that they have measured the insides. Once around is a half a mile. Twice around is a whole mile. Surprisingly enough, even with my cold, I walked a mile in a half hour. I would like to walk at least six miles a week. It's good to have goals.

I've had my Lazboy recliner for over a decade. Usually, I spend several hours a day there and from time to time I sleep there as well. It's been making noises it shouldn't make for at least a week. Yesterday, it just quit working.

The problem, a broken support underneath. Fixable, I think.
Christmas before last, I got a Dremel multitool which is perfect for cutting in awkward spaces. I was able to cut out the bad section. (Sort of like a dentist)
Many many years ago M and I went to a workworking show in Portland. It featured the Kreg pocket screw system. It lets you attach two pieces of wood from the side instead of the back. This allowed me to attach some new supports.

Here you see the results and I am back in my favorite chair again.

a fictional town in Colorado which is much like Greeley. The lives of migrants

and their lack of rights is told accurately, I think. One of the great

speeches in the movie is given by Bruce Willis, who defends the indefeasible.

I was browsing through possible instant Netflix choices this morning and came across Without Evidence. It's the story of the Salem murder of Michael Francke in January, 1989. This was just after we returned to Oregon from Colorado.

The murder took place on the opposite side of Center Street from where One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed in Salem. It's a street we often use. The Wikipedia article notes that the case became a battle involving the three Portland newspapers.

Frank Gable was convicted of the murder. They rounded Gable up in Coos Bay. He was kind of charming petty criminal who even though he was incarcerated married a defense attorney. A and K went to a couple sessions of his trial. I thought from the beginning that he was railroaded.

This belief was strenghtened by their shipping him out of state, far from the Willamette Valley to do his time. The tactic worked. Out of sight, out of mind. Getting a retrial or appeal has been difficult.

Without Evidence tells the story from his brother Kevin's point of view and features a young Angelia Jolie in a very convincing role. I consider the movie worth watching.

Eliminating the Middle Man - Tuna Style

We went to Depoe Bay for the annual Salmon Bake, only to meet gigantic rain showers. So we opt for the Spouting Horn. While there, we watch through the window as a tuna fishing boat pulls in. It may have rained, but it was good day for tuna fishing. They unloaded 36 tuna fish, probably four fish a person. Of course, after you catch them, you may want them professionally filleted.

Filleting doesn't take that long, as you can see.

Our goal was to ride Portland's Tram up to OHSU. It's worth the $4.00 round trip price.

And there are lots of tourists making the trip, so maybe the city will recup some of the cost over run. Be patient with this video. I assure you the tram is coming!

So, we are in Portland for the day, which starts with A losing a lens out of her glasses. I started the previous day convincing Shopko Optical that they did not put the correct rx in my new glasses and so they will need to be redone. The result of which is I cannot see up close.

We are cat sitting in J and G's apartment with no food and no miniature screwdrivers that we can find. So, we are off to Freddies to buy a screwdriver set. No luck. On to Walgreens. In luck and on to McD's. But of course, she cannot see and I cannot see and I have no feeling to speak of in my right forefinger and thumb, so the process is going slowly.

We recruit a young couple to help. They are cheerful. But the first thing the gal does is lose the screw all together. There were extras with the screw driver we bought and the guy put it in in about five minutes flat.

So we have a lot of the day left. Our car is safely parked and we opt for public transportation.

We discover you can ride anything they have anywhere in Portland with an all day pass for $4.75. A good deal, we think and set out on the Portland Street car. Our goal is to ride the tram. More on that tomorrow.
